LEGO® CITY Arctic Helicrane 60034

A regular day for the LEGO Arctic Helicrane 60034 team

Our adventures in LEGO to date have been centered around towns and CREATOR buildings and while we do have a few LEGO CITY Police and Fire Rescue sets we haven't paid much attention to the LEGO's Arctic sub theme. Not until my son received a LEGO City Artic Helicrane 60034 as a gift from one of his favourite uncles.

With a piece count of 262 the set is targeted at kids 6-12 years so it was a little tough for my son to put it together on his own but with some assistance and patience we managed to assemble it one evening just before bedtime.

Building the LEGO Arctic Helicrane 60034 together.

He enjoys the set as it has a lot of nice details like the huskies and naturally the Helicrane with it's large rotor blades were what caught his imagination the most.

The 60034 Set

So here's what you get with the set, a Helicrane with it's container, a 4 husky snow sled with a supplementary crate of tools, exploration equipment and not mention the elusive crystal element and its ice block which is the consistent feature across the Arctic series.

The Minifigures

The set comes with 2 minifigures; the pilot and a female arctic explorer and her 4 loyal huskies. It was nice to see lots of animal figures, my son loves animals and having more animals in our LEGO® world is always welcomed.

The Arctic Explorer

The are essentially 2 play features in the set, the Expedition Team and the Helicrane.

Found!

Naturally the task of the Expedition Team is to find crystal elements and as such to ensure successful expeditions she's provided with some pretty neat tools and equipment including a nice camera for documentation purposes I assume.

The camera is a neat little build, there's also a metal detector, an ice axe and cool snow shoes.

ADVERTISMENT

The Helicrane

Now here's the biggest feature of the set, the Helicrane. It's pretty large measuring 31cm in width, 35cm in length and 11.2cm in height. As the rotor blades and tail span out quite a bit it tends to snag on stuff and come off when played and carried around the house.

The Helicrane side view

From the side you'll get to see how long this thing is, the container is removable and can be lowered and raised with the winch right by the gyro and engine.

The Pilot and cockpit of the 60034 Helicrane

It would have been nice to have seen doors into the cockpit but the Helicrane comes with one of those large front cockpit cover pieces, so to get the pilot in and out one will have to remove the entire cockpit cover.

Smooth spin of the rotor blades

The rotor blades spin really smoothly and my son naturally loves simulating it in flight as all boys do with planes and helicopters.

Storage

As usual all our sets need to be properly stored so the standard shoebox containers from our local 2 dollar shop does the job well. We do have to take the rotor blades and tail apart to fit though.

The LEGO® 60034 set all nice and stored.

Good way to keep LEGO® set neat and stackable.

Closing

Overall a pretty nice set with quite a handful of bits and details, this gift and set gave my son a nice introduction to the Arctic range and while he likes this set it still hasn't been drawn to the other Arctic sets as much as the Police and Fire sub themes.

LEGO® CITY Artic Helicrane 60034 in action

On a last note the LEGO® CITY Arctic Helicrane 60034 comes with various unique parts specific for build so in some ways I guess an alternative build would be hard but I'm beginning to see some nice Arctic theme MODS utilizing 2 or more sets.
