Mathematics may not necessarily be the most popular subject for most kids to get into unless they really love numbers so with a goal to shift my sons learning app repertoire to include more than just Alphabet apps I decided to give Quick Math Jr a shot.
I have come across various Math apps for my son and while Monkey Math School Sunshine by THUP Games and Endless Numbers by Originator Inc. are pretty decent introductory apps Quick Math Jr offers a different and alternative approach to learning numbers.
What makes Quick Math Jr really unique is its design and learning approach. Like many apps its does this with the introduction of a character and in Quick Math Jr you start out with one Monster character which your kid can customize and as he or she progresses they can create more. It was nice to see this open sandbox approach to characters that the other apps did not offer.
Create your own monsters along the way |
With their first monster all set up your kid will be presented with 3 learning games that gets randomly selected per session so there's a bit of random play here.
Quick Math Jr's minimal design and icons |
From there your kids will be presented with up to 6 different types of number learning games to complete and Shiny Things have done a nice job is designing up nice minimalistic number learning games.
Here are some highlights of the learning games:
Number Matching Monsters
This game asks your kid to count the monsters and make matches between different representations of number like dots, numerals and worded numbers.

Similiar to Count & Add Buss but this time they have to get the right numbered monsters in the right seats or sequence before progressing.

Here your kids will need to match the same numbers on each side to ensure the boat is balanced before moving on.
Spotlight on Subitizing
This game is a little more complex to the rest as it pushes your kids to think quick by remembering visual patterns and practicing his or her mental arithmetic skills.

Overall I thought the minimal design, use of sound effects and music was pleasant as background noise when my son was using it so as a parent that was welcomed in the household.
In terms of learning, my son enjoyed the experience and approach, it made learning numbers fun and entertaining for him and it additionally gave me an easy way to explain relation of number and logic though with it's simple design he was able to figure it out on his own a fair bit.
